Are Your Own Words Holding You Back?

Have you ever noticed it?

That nagging feeling that you’re stuck—that you’re simply not getting anywhere? Maybe you’ve felt like you aren’t accessing everything this life has to offer. You know, deep down, there has to be more to existence than what you are currently seeing and experiencing. You might even find yourself asking, “What is wrong with me?”

We are human—what a shocker!

As humans, we have a habit of making things far more complicated than they need to be. We take simple truths and tangle them into knots.
Most of the time, we feel like life is spiraling out of control. We feel powerless, as if we are merely victims of our circumstances. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had some truly difficult things happen in my life. I could easily sit here and tell you I am a victim of those trials.
But I refuse.
I am not a victim of anything. I refuse to adopt a victim mentality because I am an overcomer.

Too many people live a life of “waves”—constantly moving from success to self-undermining. They rely on old, tired clichés that reinforce a negative cycle:

• “All good things must come to an end.”
• “If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”
• “I have to laugh to keep from crying.”

We must remember that we are responsible for ourselves. Not our parents, our siblings, or our neighbors—we are. If we want our lives to change, it starts with what we say.

If you keep putting negative words out into the world, you will eventually start to believe them. You have to learn to fill your mind and heart with light and truth, rather than the negative. Taking control of your life begins with taking control of your words.

Proverbs 18:21 tells us:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Our words have the power to create or destroy because they are a direct reflection of our internal world.

As Proverbs 23:7 says:
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (And this isn’t just about gender; it’s a universal truth for every human soul.)

Everything in this life is connected. We aren’t just physical beings navigating a difficult world; we are spiritual beings. There is so much more to this life than what meets the eye.
When you stop speaking like a victim and start thinking like a spiritual being with agency, the world begins to open up. Fill your heart with truth, guard your speech, and watch how your path begins to clear.
