The View from the Pig Pen: Why Rock Bottom is a Blessing

Sometimes, life has a way of stripping us down until there is nothing left but the cold ground and the smell of a spiritual pig pen. It’s midnight, you’re covered in the consequences of your own choices (or just the heaviness of a broken world), and the “reality” you thought you knew has vanished.

But here is the beautiful irony of that situation: The pig pen is often the clearest place to see the stars.

When everything is going well, it’s easy to live under the illusion that we are the captains of our own souls. We get comfortable. We get complacent. It often takes the mud between our toes to remind us just how good we actually had it—and just how much we’ve been taking for granted. Gratitude usually isn’t born on the mountaintop; it’s forged in the valley.

We often think that if we find ourselves in the “pen,” God is standing at the gate with His arms crossed, waiting for an apology. But the Scriptures tells a very different story.

The moment the Prodigal Son realized he was in the mud, he remembered his Father’s house. The Father wasn’t waiting to shame him; He was scanning the horizon, ready to run. The pig pen reminds us that His love isn’t based on our cleanliness but on the character of God the Father.

Most often, this is the “shake” we all need. We don’t just return to the Father as beggars; we return as heirs. When we realize that Jesus died on that Cross, He didn’t just pay a debt; He handed over a set of keys.

We don’t have to stay in the mud, and we don’t have to listen to the whispers of the enemy.

If you are in the middle of a “pig pen” season right now, remember this: the devil and his demons of hell that are trying to keep you down must bow to the name of Jesus. You aren’t just a survivor of the mud; you are an ambassador of the King, standing in the authority of the Cross.

“At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”  Philippians 2:10 (NIV)

Before heading back into your day, take a moment to sit with these questions. Be honest—the Father already knows the answer, and He’s waiting to meet you in it.

If you’re in a “pig pen” moment right now, what is one thing you’ve realized you were taking for granted?

What is the enemy whispering to you in the mud? (e.g., “You’ve gone too far,” or “You aren’t worthy.”)

Based on the authority Jesus gave you, what is the truth that cancels out that lie?

Heavenly Father, I thank You that even when I find myself in the mud at midnight, Your love is searching for me. Thank You for the “shake” that wakes me up to the reality of Your goodness. I stop right now and acknowledge the authority I have because of the Cross. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I command every spirit of shame, fear, and defeat to bow. I am not a slave to this season; I am a child of the King. I’m getting up, I’m coming home, and I’m walking in Your power. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Authority Arsenal: 5 Verses to Carry Into Battle

Authority isn’t about how loud you yell; it’s about whose Name you carry. When you are submitted to the Father, you aren’t just a person in a pig pen—you are a child of the King with the legal right to command the darkness to move. Speak these truths out loud until the atmosphere shifts.

1. The Power of the Name

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.”
— Philippians 2:9-10 (NIV)

2. The Delegated Authority

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
— Luke 10:19 (KJV)

3. The Reality of the Cross

“He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”
— Colossians 2:15 (NLT)

4. The Truth About Who You Are

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”
— Romans 8:15 (NKJV)

5. The Resistance Strategy

“So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
— James 4:7 (NLT)
